PT. Pengelola Limbah Kutai Kartanegara (PT. PLKK) is engaged in management of hazardous waste which generally comes from exploration and production of petroleum and natural gas as well as mining. PT. PLKK serves oil and gas industry, mining, and other industries that produce hazardous waste. PT. PLKK is founded in Balikpapan in early 2003.

Operation area of PT. PLKK is located in Gunung Pasir, Kelurahan Kuala Samboja, Kecamatan Samboja, Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, Indonesia .

PT. PLKK performs hazardous waste management stage by stage according with technology, equipment, and environmental conditions. The purpose is to reduce and eliminate hazardous waste safely and efficiently . It is not only related to treatment process, but also environment and human health aspects.

Stages of hazardous waste that are conducted by PT.PLKK consist of storage, collection, transportation, utilization, and treatment. Storage and collection activities of hazardous waste are intended to prevent release of waste into environment so hazard potential to human and environment can be avoided. PT. PLKK does storage and collection of waste, both at the costumer's sites (in-situ) and at PT. PLKK's operation area (ex-situ). The method selection is based on situ conditions, amount and characteristic of waste, and transportation needs. Waste transportation activities carried out during waste treatment performed at operation area of PT. PLKK, Samboja, Kutai Kartanegara.

Waste utilization activities of PT. PLKK include stabilization/solidification and segregation. Both utilization patterns are intended to reduce the risk of hazardous waste, and reuse

of new waste. For waste treatment, PT. PLKK performs a variety of technical methods according to type and characteristic of waste. Waste treatment methods of PT. PLKK include Sludge Oil Recovery (SOR), dewatering, water waste treatment, bioremediation, and thermal destruction. PT. PLKK also performs several activities that related to exploration and refinery of petroleum, namely solid control and tank cleaning. As legal activities, PT. PLKK has a permit license from Ministry of Environment and Regional Government of Kabupaten Kutai Kartanegara.
